Here is the list of basic WordPress plugins I recommend you install before building your site.
This plugin switches off the Gutenberg editor. You can read about the editor here. I prefer to switch it off and use the classic editor because I use the Divi theme to build websites so the Gutenberg editor isn’t needed. It adds a lot of confusion to the build process so I hide it from my clients to keep things simple. This plugin is FREE. Download it from the WordPress plugin repository by going to Plugins -> Add New. In the search box type ‘Disable Gutenberg’ and find the plugin by Jeff Starr. Click ‘Install’, then ‘Activate’. You don’t need to do anything else.
The first thing I do when building a website is put it in coming soon mode and tick the button in the WordPress settings to stop the site being crawled by Google. This gives my clients confidence when they build their site that no one can what they create until they feel ready. While you are building your site it is common to build pages you want to delete or name them wrong. When I upload my wireframe framework (lots of pages pre designed, using default styling) they have names such as ‘home page wireframe 1’, ‘contact me wireframe 2’. You don’t want these pages appearing in Google and you don’t want your potential clients seeing them either. The plugin is FREE. Download it from the WordPress plugin repository by going to Plugins -> Add New. In the search box type ‘Coming soon’ and find the plugin by SeedProd. Click ‘Install’, then ‘Activate’. Once it is activated you will see ‘SeedProd’ in your left hand WordPress menu. Click on SeedProd -> Settings and put your site into coming soon mode. You can fancy up your coming soon page if you want but unless you are creating a lot of hype around your website launch or you already have an established website that you are taking offline, not many people will see it.
(Premium plugin but if you are on my coaching program I include this for FREE). This plugin adds a few extra styling that the Divi theme doesn’t have (yet).
This is a FREE security plugin that will keep your website safe from hackers while you build your site. The plugin is FREE. Download it from the WordPress plugin repository by going to Plugins -> Add New. In the search box type ‘wordfence’ and find the plugin by WordFence. Click ‘Install’, then ‘Activate’. Set the plugin up according to the WordFence instructions.
This is a FREE plugin that will keep your site backed up. It’s a good idea to backup to the cloud, I encourage my clients to use Google Drive or DropBox. The plugin is FREE. Download it from the WordPress plugin repository by going to Plugins -> Add New. In the search box type ‘Updraftpro’ and find the plugin by Updraft. Click ‘Install’, then ‘Activate’.
To set the plugin up with your chosen storage device you need to follow the instructions by Updraft.
These are just the plugins to get you started. As you build your website you may want to add more plugins or you may want to try plugins with premium features. If you need help and support while building your site contact me to find out how I can help.
